Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction

Does Liposuction produce permanent results?

Fat cells that are removed during Liposuction can never grow back. However, to maintain the body shape, which you have after Liposuction, you need to watch your weight. The results of liposuction will be permanent, as long as you maintain your postoperative weight. If you were to gain a significant amount of weight following the liposuction procedure, new fat cells can develop. Even if you gain a few extra pounds, you may find that the weight is distributed more evenly instead of accumulating in the areas that were problematic for you in the past.

Does Liposuction cure obesity?

Liposuction should never be viewed as a cure to obesity. The ideal liposuction patient is within 20-30% of their ideal body weight and has localized pockets of fat that are diet and exercise resistant. If you are above the 20-30% range and the fat you would like to extract is within a given area (thighs, abdomen, flanks etc.), you may still be a candidate for the procedure.

How will I look initially and when will I see the results?

Most patients will typically see a majority of their results within 1-3 months of the surgery. It is important to realize that the amount of time it takes for results to materialize varies greatly among individuals. The healing process is gradual, so you should expect to wait a while before fully enjoying the results of your liposuction. For the first couple of weeks after the procedure, you will experience swelling related to the surgery. When the swelling begins to subside, you will begin to see the results of Liposuction. Make sure to talk to your doctor and follow all post-operative instructions so as to limit the amount of time required to see the results.

When can I resume my normal activities?

Recovery from Liposuction is dependant on your body healing process and your ability to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions. Every individual will heal a little differently, but in general you should expect to return to work within 1-2 weeks. In terms of exercise and like functions, you can expect to wait 3-4 weeks. Because recovery does vary greatly among different individuals, it is always best to talk to your doctor before returning to normal activities.

What is the cost for Liposuction?

While cost is an important consideration with the Liposuction procedure, the experience and Liposuction expertise of your Board-Certified Physician is the key to a successful surgery. Cost is dependant on several factors and without seeing you, it is very hard to determine how much the procedure would actually cost. It is almost impossible to give an exact cost for Liposuction without first seeing a Board-Certified Physician. At best, you can expect to receive a range of prices for each area that you would like the procedure performed.

The factors which weigh into the procedure include: the size of the patient/number of locations, the amount of time and effort required by the surgeon, anesthesiologist's costs, operating room costs and other related expenses such as compression garments, etc.

If you would like, most plastic surgery offices do provide financing for Liposuction and would be glad to help you through the process. Make sure to inquire about the financing when scheduling your consultation.
